About the map

States and territories

The geography includes all 50 US states, the District of Columbia and five inhabited US territories: Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Counties and equivalents

Counties include county equivalents such as parishes, boroughs, census areas, independent cities and planning regions. Connecticut uses its nine planning regions.

Map layout and scale

Alaska, Hawaii and the territories are displayed as insets. The insets use separate scales and positions to make each area visible. Borders are generalized for a practical, interactive display.
